Connections - Go travelling!
Kajaani is located approximately 550 kilometers from the capital Helsinki. Nearest bigger cities are Oulu and Kuopio, both approx. 180 km away (2-3 hours in a train). Kajaani is located in the province of Kainuu in Eastern Finland. The Russian boarder is about 160 km from Kajaani (Kostamuksha).
It takes you about 6-7 hours to travel from Helsinki to Kajaani by train and a bit more if you take a bus. There is a small airport also in Kajaani, and it only takes about one hour to fly from Helsinki to Kajaani. The airport is located about 10 km away from the city centre. There is a bus connection to the city centre from each flight but for example to reach the student apartments, you will most likely need to take a taxi.
If you wish to travel around during your stay in Finland, you can take the train to easily reach the nearest cities. Both railway station and bus station are conveniently located in the centre of Kajaani. "Onnibus" offers cheap bus fares to Helsinki, Kuopio and Jyväskylä.
Sometimes students also rent a car together and travel to different cities, some even up north to visit nothern parts of Finland and Nordkapp. It is also possible to travel to Helsinki and take a ferry to Tallinn, Estonia. This only takes a few hours and you can drop by during one day. As part of studies, it is possible to visit St. Petersburg in Russia (a study trip).
